"Hi Bishal, I got a 110% raise. This is totally unheard of at my company but your methods work. I am throwing a party for friends. I would love to invite you but I know you don't come to parties much. When can I invite you personally to my house? Please come. I want to host my mentor. By the way, my daughter wants to meet you as well after we can meet again."
I love these emails. By the way, he's NOT a personal 1-on-1 coaching client. He happened to come to one of my programs and has done pretty good for himself. It's HIS commitment that has paid off. I am proud of you Ramesh.
Truth is that if you become a world-class speaker, life becomes easier. No, all your problems don't go away, but you get MORE POWER to handle all problems with ease, energy & enthusiasm. I have many challenges in life and my high level confidence makes me break those problems one by one.
And in order to be that world-class confident person, you must avoid a few common (gasp stupid!) mistakes that most professionals make.
Here are 5 TOP MISTAKES MOST PEOPLE MAKE IN FIRST 60 SECONDS:
1. Wasting the first 60 seconds. If you waste the intro with "good morning, happy to be here gentlemen," then I have nothing but sympathy for you. I hope you grow up as a speaker because those cheesy opening is yawned on and ignored.
2. Not understanding the 7-second rule of influential speaking. People judge you, and that's the truth. No matter how much our YouTube Spiritual Gurus say we shouldn't judge, people ARE judging you. So your confidence, your body language, your tonality, and your smile----all of those things matter. Show yourself as an authority and speak like one. You just have 7 seconds to establish yourself as an EXPERT.
3. Talking about yourself or your company. Stop talking about yourself. Talk about THEM. Tell a client story, or a employee incident. Engage them right from the beginning. And for God's sake, stop talking about weather. :)
4. Not able to break the ice. If you don't know how to connect with other people FAST, sorry to break the news my friend, then you are in for a hard suffering life here. People have every opportunity you want. Learn to talk to people, articulate your points and evoke curiosity.
5. Not answering the question WIIFM. What is WIIFM? It's "What's In It For Me?" People are unconsciously always asking this question when you're talking. So make sure you tell people in the first 30 seconds what they're going to get OUT of your presentation/talk/phone call. This gives them a roadmap and people like that.
